Tips & Hints and Outside Box Thinking

I promised a few that I would show a different version of my new design, "Valentine Flowers" .  Sometimes when drawing up the design, I get different ideas for color schemes.  I knew that I wanted to make the design red & white, but I couldn't stop thinking about how pretty it would look with a black & red color scheme.
So I made this ....
It's changed up from the original design, as you can see.  I made some of the flowers smaller and I scattered french knots throughout the hearts.  From a distance, the heart shapes aren't as evident but close up, the heart shapes appear!  I really love the black/red contrasts on this and unlike the red/white one, this one doesn't so much look like Valentines Day hearts.  It's an all year round candle mat.
So if you've purchased the "Valentine Flowers" pattern , think outside the box for different color schemes!

My email is always open for questions and problems from my customers and surprisingly, from non-customers too.  I'm always willing to help when I can.
Some of the most common questions I get, I try to respond by posting the tips and ideas on my blog.  Since these seem to get asked over and over, instead of repeatedly answering the same questions, I send them a link and it saves me a lot of time.
So here's the next bunch of help for commonly asked questions ....

THREADS

I mostly use DMC size 8 pearle cotton threads for my stitching.  I have a storage bin full of assorted colors ...
The problem with storing this many balls of pearl cotton is that it gets messy because the threads love to unroll and twist and tangle with the other unrolled threads. I got so frustrated with all the tangling and the mess so now....
I just put a little piece of tape over the end of the thread to hold it securely. So that it doesn't leave a tape residue, I stick the tape on the back of my hand first to get off some of the stickiness.  This keep all of my threads neat and untangled.  When I use the thread, I save the tape by sticking it on the white plastic and then reattach the tape when I'm done.  Now, there are cute little plastic containers (bubbles)that are sold specifically for holding each ball of pearle cotton.  They have holes drilled in the tops to feed the thread through. With the amount of thread that I have though, the bubbles just aren't price feasible for me and besides, the bubbles take up even more space.

Another problem with these threads is that the little paper discs that are on the tops of each ball always comes off after the thread is used.  This is a problem because the discs have the color # on them so if you loose that paper disc, and you need to purchase another of the same color, you won't know what color to buy.
Solution:
As soon as I start using the thread, I use a black sharpie to write the thread color number on the inside white plastic.

One last hint/tip about threads is basically a cat problem.
We have two cats.  They are sisters, so they tend to do exactly the same thing when it comes to getting into mischief.  Their favorite thing to do is to play with any of my sewing things that I have sitting out, especially those cute round balls of thread.  I can't ever leave the thread unguarded.
My solution:
I took one empty Parmesan cheese container....
I put 5 of my most often used thread colors in the container...
I fed the thread through the holes on the lid and no more balls of thread under the couch or under the fridge!
I imagine some day I'll make a nice wool cover for this container, but for now, it works perfect.
I have Ecru, Black, red, gold and green in there.  5 balls fit nicely without crowded.  Because they have room to move, the threads don't tangle.  If more than 5 balls are in there, it's too tight and they'll tangle.

My Work Surface

I know I've mentioned this before in another blog posting a few years back but it's worth retelling.
I do most of my stitching on the dining room table.  So many times, I'd find myself accidently stitching my wool to the tablecloth.  To prevent that, now I use a thin board for my stitching surface.
It's also handy because when I need to use the dining room table for say ...EATING DINNER...all I have to do is move the board with all my sewing work on it.  It's also nice to use when sewing while watching tv on the couch.  I put a pillow on my lap, put the board on the pillow and there's my nice solid sewing surface.
I have different sizes that I use but the main size is this one which measures about 15" x 18".  They can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowes .  I don't know what they're called but they're located in with pegboards and come in sheets.  I imagine they'd cut them to size there for you, but my hubby has always cut them to size for me.  Both sides have a smooth surface so make sure to look for that as opposed to a one side smooth, the other side rough.

That's all for now.

"Valentine Flowers" New Pattern For The New Year!

Happy New Year, Y'all!  Valentines Day is a little more than a month away so I have a brand new pattern that's super easy and quick to stitch up.

Valentine Flowers is shown here with 100% wool with hand-dyed red wool.  But to save on expense, it would still look really pretty using wool felt instead.
The nice thing about this design is that it only uses two colors.
I've made this with a black background and black and red flowers.  It's really pretty too.
The picture of that will come later.
To purchase, just click on the "buy now" button over there on the left sidebar. This price is for US & Canada customers. All othe international customers will be charged an additional shipping fee to cover the extra postage cost. (usually about $1.30 or so.)
The wool kit is available for this and is available on my website HERE.
If you'd like to pay by check instead of credit card through Paypal, just email me and I'll give you my mailing address.  cathspennies@gmail.com
Thanks and Happy Day!

Good Morning Roosters! Tutorial for New Pattern

Whelp...it looks like I messed up my blog post.  All I wanted to do was edit my Good Morning Rooster tutorial and somehow it posted it as a new post.  Just wanted to let you know that this post was originally done in October but my editing messed up the date!

For several years now, I've been wanting to do a rooster design.  This is a design that I drew up and then put aside a few years ago.  It's time to introduce the finished, "Good Morning Roosters!"

Way back, 12+ years ago, one of my first attempts at making a penny rug was  a beautiful rooster design.  I had purchased the pattern online from a designer (whose name I won't mention).  I cut out all of the pattern pieces...which were MANY and then attempted to stitch it together.  I gave up very quickly because I discoverd that the pattern pieces didn't fit how they were supposed to fit.  The pattern only had the front picture to go by with no clear instructions of which feather should be placed first or even where all of the feathers went!  I was so disappointed and sad that I had wasted my precious wool on something that I wasn't able to finish.
I still have that pattern and all of the precious wool pieces sitting on a shelf in my wool room.  I learned from that poorly written pattern though. When I write the instructions for my patterns, I always include a pattern layout guide which shows exactly where each and every piece is to be placed.  I know, first hand, how frustrating it is to try to figure out poorly written pattern instructions.
In this case, for this "Good Morning Roosters!" not only do I have a layout guide with exact placement instructions, I'm also including a step-by-step tutoral to make it even easier and less intimidating for those who are less experienced at working with wool!
As always, this is a copyrighted design, created by ME, Cath's Pennies Designs.  If you wish to make it, just buy the pattern!  Please don't steal!

"Good Morning Roosters!" Candle Mat Tutorial

To start, I traced the backgound scallop shape onto freezer paper, ironed the freezer paper onto my black wool and then cut it out.

The roosters and sunflowers need to be centered on each of the 8 scallops.  To make centering easier, I stitch in some temporary basting to mark each scallop into a pie section.  With a ruler and chalk pencil, I drew lines on the backside of the black wool, across the wool, from point to opposite point.
I then made quick long basting stitches along the chalked line, making sure to clearly mark the very center of the wool.
These basting stitches will be removed once all the roosters and sunflowers are stitched.
Now it's time to assemble the roosters!  I pinned the main rooster body onto the wool, lining the rooster's chest right up against the basted line.

Then I pinned the gold rooster head with the orange feather section tucked underneath.  The pattern is marked to show the exact position to place the orange under the gold so it's easy to get it placed just perfect.

And lastly, before stitching the body, I pinned the rooster's comb and beak under the head.  Note: I suggest using a lightweight fusible interfacing for the beak to keep it from fraying.  It's small and the beak is sharply pointed so the interfacing really helps.
It's difficult to see the stitching because of the tweed colors, but I've whip stitched around all the body parts with black floss.  If you are using plain colored wool or wool felt, then the stitching will show so the instructions recommend  blanket stitching with black floss so that it looks neater or use thread colors that match your wools so that the whip stitches will blend in.  I've used whip stitches on this tweed wool because I like how it gives a slightly frayed look that resembles ruffled feathers.  The solid colored wool doesn't fray like this so blanket stitching is almost a necessity.

The rooster's wattle is whip stitched on and the eye is made with a french knot.

Now comes the really fun part... the feathers.  Keep in mind that this might look difficult but it's not.  All the feather will fit and I'll show you exactly how they fit!
I've started with the top two feathers.  The green feather is tucked under the gold and the green feather is arched almost right up against the rooster's comb.  Make sure the feather tips don't extend too far into the pie section next to the rooster...otherwise it infringes on the sunflower leaf space.
The feathers are whip stitched in place.

I forgot to take pictures as I stitched on the rest of the feathers so now the pictures are showing how this looks using plain colored wool with blanket stitching.

So, the red feather is placed in position, just slightly overlapping the gold feather and the green feather is stitched directly underneath.  For this plain colored wool, I blanket stitched around the edges but for the tweed wool, I just whipped stitched the edges.

The last three feathers have a black backing added to them since they will be hanging over the edge of the mat.
So I placed the black backing under each feather and blanket stitched all around the edges to attach.  (The tweed wool is also blanket stitched to secure the backing.
Here's the finished rooster done in tweed.

This is the finished rooster done in plain colors.

Now for the sunflowers.  To center the sunflower stem perfectly in it's space I placed a ruler across the scallop, from tip to tip.  That space measures 5" so the half/middle point of the scallop is 2 1/2".

I marked the 2 1/2" with a chalk pencil...

Then again with the ruler, I lined the ruler up with that mark and the center of the black background. I drew my chalk line for the stem.
I stem stitched up the chalk line to create the sunflower stem.

I recommend using lightweight fusible interfacing for the sunflower since the petals are so small.
The sunflower pieces are pinned together ... the main sunflower petals, the green sunflower petals and the sunflower center.  They are all whip stitched in place. For the solid colored wool, I whip stitched the green petals and blanket stitched around the gold sunflower petals.

The leaves are stitched on and now all the basting stitches are ready to be removed!
Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures to show how I attached the red background, but it's pretty easy without pictures.  The purchased pattern will give the complete instructions for adding on the outside background.
And there is the finished candle mat!
The pattern along with wool and a wool kit will be ready to sell tomorrow.  It's really really exceptionally pretty when finished so check back tomorow to order this pattern.
I will also be sending a newsletter out in a couple days so if you're not signed up to receive it, just click on the newsletter signup button over there on the left sidebar.
Thank you ladies!
Happy Day!

Black Friday & Weekend Pattern & Wool Kit SALE!

Are You Ready To Shop!?!?

Let It Snow Pattern
I'm having my own online website sale for Black Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

Starting at midnight Thursday night, all of my patterns will be reduced to $7.00 each.  That includes shipping for US & Canada customers.  All other international customers will just have to pay the shipping difference.
The sale ends at midnight, Sunday night.
It's not too late to get several candle mats stitched to give for Christmas gifts.  To help you get them finished even quicker, consider purchasing the wool kit.

To help you out, in addition to the pattern sale, I'm also reducing the prices for all Christmas wool kits.  Wool kits make wonderful gifts for those special friends who love to stitch.  The kits include all of the 100% wool that is needed to make the candle mats.

"Snow" Wool Kit with Pattern

This "Snow" Penny Rug Wool kit is especially nice.  The wool is super fluffy and thick to make the puffy snowball pennies really stand out!  It's really exceptionally pretty when finished ...and very 3 dimensional with the puffy wool.

Stockings Of Joy Wool Kit with Pattern
The Stockings of Joy candle mat design is still my favorite candle mat to give as a gift, out of all my Christmas designs.

It's just so sooooo pretty when finished.

Christmas Sugar Cookies Ornaments

"Christmas Sugar Cookies" Candle Mat & Ornaments wool kit

The Christmas Sugar cookies candle mat and ornaments has been such a good seller.  I have trouble keeping the hand-dyed icing wool in stock for this.  I sell out everytime I list it as available.
I'm dyeing more wool icing colors today so there will be plenty available for the sale.
The little ornaments look so realistic that I can almost guarantee that a visitor will attempt to eat one.
They also look adorable tied to presents, so keep that in mind.
The kit comes with enough wool to make the candle mat and 6 ornaments.  Instead of the colorful french knot "sugar sprinkles" , consider stitching glass beads instead.

Anyone wishing to pay by check instead of credit card during this sale, just contact me at cathspennies@gmail.com and I'll send you my mailing address.  As long as the mailed check is postmarked by Monday, November 26, the sale price will be honored.

NOTE: To allow myself time for packing all the kit orders, any wool kits which are ordered this weekend will be mailed out on Tuesday morning (November 27)

Thank you ladies!

Happy Day, Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Shopping for bargains this weekend!!

GO VOTE! (PoliticalStuffWithLotsOfPictures)

Before I starting typing this, I went to Google images to look for a good picture of Obama & Romney together. Scrolling down, the Google images amused me greatly because there were some daRn funny ones.

We can learn alot about the candidates just by looking at the pictures.
This is a good one to start with:
Slugfest indeed!  I learned that in this slugfest, it looks like Romney got a good left hook into Obama's face.
Of course there's the typical Romney/Obama faceoff picture which isn't necesarily funny but should be included in with the list of pictures for the Presidentail candidates.  In this picture, it looks like Romney has a campaign face on and Obama looks like he means business.
We have an Obama/Romney eating picture ... that wafflecone looks really good!  Obama likes green ice cream waffle cones.  Romney seems more presidential here because he prefers vanilla icecream with cherries ... normally called "whitehouse"  ice cream.
We have the presidential baby-kissing pictures.  It's a must-have for all presidential campaigns.  It looks like Romney prefers kissing girls and umm... Obama prefers to kiss boys.  Gosh, that sounds bad, eh?
Of course, with Halloween being so close to election day, we are naturally going to see lots of Obama/Romney clones.
To me, it looks like Obama's face might be a bit more realistic looking.  The teeth look off on Romney... and the hair too.
Obama makes a better face mask, people.  Keep that in mind when voting.

Then there's the Romney/Obama caricature pictures.  I have to admit, Obama has a really good face for those who do caricature drawing.  I don't know which one will win the most votes from women, but it's nice to see the men fighting over us!
Perhaps the one that made me really smile was this one......

So funny.  When looking at this, it's not about who wins the fight.  It makes me think how funny it would be to see them rolling down bowling lanes to see which one knocks down the most pins.

As I'm typing this, I received two phone calls from 800 numbers which are guaranteed to be about voting/elections.  Anymore, I look at the caller id and if I don't recongnize the number, I pick the phone up and drop it right back down.
Yes, I hang up on these people.  I probably don't have to tell you how many of these calls I get everyday because all of us are getting the same calls.
Although I was thrilled to hear Bill Clinton talking to meon the phone,
I sometimes get so tired of the phone ringing that to protest, I've considered not voting.

I can't do that though.  I think maybe they ought to pay us citizens to listen to their campaign rhetoric.  I know if I were paid to listen to something, I would listen better simply because I was getting some reward.
Yes, I'm tired of the phone calls. I'm tired of the commercials on tv. I'm tired of trying to figure out who is telling the truth and who is distorting the truth. It's so bad that I get confused, but whether I vote Republican or Democrat, or a little bit of both, I want it all to end.
I will always do my part to end it by going out to vote.

Good luck to all you Romney/Obama voters.  It's supposed to be a close race and it will be exciting to see the results as they come in tonight.  I hope and wish for all of you to have to stand in loooooong voting lines today.  The long lines to vote are what we need in this country because it means a good turnout!
