The Good and Bad of Snow

This is what we woke up to this morning.

I love waking up to snow like this especially when, like today,it’s a Saturday when no family member has to travel to get to work or school.

My way of thinking is that if it’s going to be cold, we might as well have snow with it rather than awful rain.   Again, as long as no one has to travel.

Here’s what the main road looks like from our house. We live about 2 miles out of town and high up on a hill so we always get more snow than those who live in town.  This road is a major road though and it gets a lot of traffic.  PennDot doesn’t do a very good job at tending to our road so we get quite a few accidents and stuck vehicles trying to get up or down the winding hills.

In his younger days, my husband used to go down to the road to help push vehicles up the hill.  I think he thought it was fun.  I always held my breath and didn’t look because I worried that he would get hit.  A human standing on icy roads with out-of-control moving vehicles on that same ice is just asking for trouble.  Thankfully his good deeds were rewarded because he always came back home, frozen and shaking his head about the “women drivers”  who always get stuck. :)

Nowadays, hubby just watches, like me and waits for the Penn Dot truck to assist those stranded motorists who are stuck on the hill.

He hates snow.  Snow for him means work and hassle.  He’s the one that goes out to shovel it off the driveway.  We have a loooooong driveway and I would help him but he has his way of doing it and doesn’t appreciate ME doing it a different way.

So, here are the different ways that he COULD clear the driveway, if he wished.

  • lawn tractor with chains on the tires and snowblade
  • snowblower
  • 4 wheel drive pick-up truck with snowblade
  • Bobcat with scooping blade
  • ME helping him with any of those previous ways

He chooses none of those.  He uses his own manly power along with  one snow shovel.

I don’t know why.

I’ve stopped asking.

I just hope he doesn’t have a heart attack while doing it.

He does use the snowblower to help out.  The snowblower doesn’t work well with the heavy wet snows though.

But really, I’ve learned over time to just not ask why he does what he does.  He would like snow a lot better though if he would just remove it in a easier way.

I think today is a good day for baking cookies and watching old movies on tv.  … and watching the dear hubby shovel the snow. :)

Happy, snowy day everyone!

Have to chuckle over this story. I so hear you on this snow and hubby thing. Good that you will be content to bake and enjoy a good movie. It's A Wonderful Life was playing in my sewing room yesterday. :-)

That is too funny! What a brave soul your hubby was to stand out there with "snow drivers" going back and forth on the road! I'm sure it was scary for you!

I agree about snow being beautiful and we love it when we have it here, but prefer not to have it unless everyone is safe at home. People go nuts down here when we have snow, because it is such a rarity. But that's also what makes it so nice to have once in awhile.
Christmas Blessings to you!

I live in Meadville and we didn't get much snow at all :) It's usually the opposite because we are so close to Lake Erie but I'm glad you "southerner's" got it instead of us for a change...LOL

My DH is the same way! He prefers to use the shovel but will allow me to help...IF I want to! We live about 2 miles out of town and we're on a hill, too so I know what you're saying there. Thank goodness we're still within the county's route so they plow us out and keep the roads clear for the school buses.

Hi Cathy, The snow sure was pretty. We have a different way of getting rid of snow at our house. As long as it is under 6" we just take the car and move it up and down the drive way until it is nice and flat. Of course two days later you can't wlak on it because it is frozen solid....at least until the sun copmes out and thaws it out. In the meantime wee just walk through the yard! Hows that's for lazyness!

We got 8 inches of snow in NC and our very gracious neighbor plowed our 450 ft steep driveway for us. A very nice Christmas present.
